Why positioning eats performance for breakfast

Teleios Edge6 min read

There is a persistent myth in South African marketing: that performance media is the great equaliser. With the right budget, the right targeting and the right creative, any brand can win. The reality is harsher. Paid media does not create demand; it amplifies the demand that already exists. If your positioning is weak, every rand of performance spend simply broadcasts that weakness to a larger audience.

What positioning really means

Positioning is the answer to one question: what do you own in the mind of the customer? It is not a tagline, a logo or a colour palette. It is the promise you can make more credibly than anyone else. In crowded categories — retail, fintech, hospitality, recruitment — the brands that win are the ones who have staked out a single, defensible idea.

A generic promise like “we deliver quality” or “we put customers first” is invisible. It is what everyone says, so the brain files it under noise. Sharp positioning says, “for this specific person, with this specific problem, we are the only logical choice.” That specificity makes the rest of your marketing cheaper and more effective.

The three-question positioning test

Before we spend a cent on media, we pressure-test positioning with three questions:

  • Who is this for — and who is it not for?
  • What does the customer become after they choose us?
  • Why should they believe us over the next option?

If the answers are vague, the campaign will be vague. If the answers are sharp, the creative almost writes itself. The brands we work with at Teleios Edge usually have a strong product; they simply have not translated that product into a sharp position. That translation is where the leverage lives.

Test it before you scale it

We treat positioning like a product feature: we test it before we ship it. Small creative experiments, landing-page variants and message interviews with real customers reveal what resonates. Only when we have message-market fit do we open the performance taps. The result is not just better click-through rates; it is a brand that compounds over time instead of fighting a price war every quarter.

Strong positioning is a moat. Performance is the engine that makes it visible. Get the order wrong and you burn fuel going nowhere.
