The funnel has been the dominant metaphor in marketing for decades. Attract, convert, close, delight. It is useful, but it is also leaky. Every stage loses people. Every campaign ends. Every budget reset forces you to start again. Sustainable growth does not come from plugging leaks in a funnel. It comes from building loops that compound.
What is a growth loop?
A growth loop is any system where the output of one action becomes the input for the next round of growth. Action produces output; output is reinvested; reinvestment produces more action. The loop feeds itself. Word-of-mouth, viral content, partner referrals, customer success stories and earned media are all loops. Each completed cycle makes the next cycle easier.
Funnels are linear. Loops are compounding. A funnel asks, “How do we get more customers this quarter?” A loop asks, “How do we make every customer create the next customer?” The second question is harder to answer but far more valuable once solved.
Map your loop in three parts
We map growth loops around three questions:
- Input: What is the initial action or asset that starts the loop?
- Multiplier: What turns that input into a larger output?
- Reinvestment: How does the output flow back into the loop?
For a B2B service business, the input might be a successful client outcome. The multiplier is a case study, testimonial or referral. The reinvestment is the sales and marketing system that turns that proof into the next prospect. The loop turns one happy client into many conversations.
Loops in the real world
At Teleios Edge, we look for loops that fit the business model. A retail brand might have a social proof loop: great product experience → customer content → new customer discovery. A corporate brand might have a thought leadership loop: original insight → media coverage → inbound enquiry → new client → more insight. The shape of the loop changes, but the principle is the same.
Campaigns still matter. They are the accelerants. But the architecture underneath should be a loop, not a funnel. Otherwise you are paying full price for growth every single quarter.
Build systems that compound. The funnel is a tactic. The loop is the strategy.
